love cures all..

I've been sick lately. Allergies snuck up late this year. Since Saturday night I have been sneezing, rubbing my eyes and trying not to have my head explode. Tried everything. Took the meds, had tons of sleep. Black herbal tea. Soup. All worked for a bit but the bugger kept on returning. This morning, I felt the best I've felt in a few days. I came downstairs to start my work with a good feeling for the day. I remembered that I downloaded this special Michael Jackson Mixtape J Period did. Along with that and doing this, some design work, and other things I love doing, it gave me that extra umph of good vibes to get me 100%. Sometimes, it's not what the doctors give you or the family secret remedies that work. It's you putting your head towards the things that make your heart beat that makes you feel better. Love cures all.

Go Here to download that Jackson mixtape.

got hip hop goodies in the mail, today

I went upstairs and looked through the mail. Bills. A Christmas card and something from my friends from Urbnet. It wasn't a cd. It wasn't clothes. It wasn't tickets to some event. I wondered what was going on. What could the Urbnet guys be sending me now? I opened up the envelope and pulled out three little business cards. They had little codes on them each with different album names on them. One was for D-Sisive's latest free album, Jonestown, The other two were Moka Only projects. The first I saw was Moka's annual Christmas project, Martian Xmas 2009 and the other was The Nope's debut drop, Melba. As I write, I'm downloading all three. I will write a review on each in the coming days.

The thing I found the best is that the package came just in time for New Music Monday's!

I Love Early Christmas gifts. Especially of the Hip Hop kind.

Thanks Urbnet!

winter sessions

My latest podcast is up. We look at some wintery tracks and a little tribute to Lennon. Listen to it here.

humble and fred return for the xmas podcast

They'll be recording it Saturday afternoon. Humble and Fred haven't done a Christmas podcast in two years. The due did reunite last year for a little show downtown at the Dominion on Queen, where they invited old sidekicks, and listeners to listen to the live madness. I will keep you updated on when the show is posted on the interweb or check out Mike Boon's blog.

jonestown documentary..

Produced for the PBS series American Experience, Stanley Nelson’s Jonestown: The Life and Death of the Peoples’ Temple, written by his frequent collaborator Marcia Smith, examines the infamous religious cult formed by Jim Jones and the events that led to the group’s horrifying mass suicide in 1978. The film traces Jones’ history from his unhappy childhood in rural Indiana.

Witnesses describe a strange, charismatic young man who nursed a seemingly sincere desire for social justice, but also reputedly murdered small animals as a child. Jones’ desire to befriend people across color and class lines alienated his family and neighbors. Eventually, he moved to Indianapolis, where, as a young Pentecostal minister, he started the city’s first integrated church.

Eventually, Jones moved his church to California to escape the racism he perceived in Indiana. In Redwood Valley, his church took on a new life, and he began aggressively recruiting new members. At first, members were required to tithe a percentage of their worth, but eventually, they were expected to relinquish all of their “worldly goods” to the Temple. In 1974, Jones moved to San Francisco, where he acquired some political clout before his high profile caught up with him.

Just before a damaging exposé was published, he moved his people to what was meant to be a “paradise” outside the racism and oppression of America, in Guyana. Nelson interviews eyewitnesses, including many former members of the Temple, and members of Congressman Leo Ryan’s staff who managed to escape when the congressman’s investigatory visit ended in bloodshed. The film had its world premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.

two new tracks from d-sisive

Brand new track from the hardest working emcee in Toronto. D-Sisive's follow up album from his hugely successful LP, Let the Children Die will be a free album that will be available online on Wednesday at D-Sisive.com. Jonestown takes D back to his days of making boom bap Hip Hop with tight lyrical skills which will remind older fans of his battling days. D-Sisive's first singles from the LP are a good example of what kind of heat this Toronto native can put out when he has the right beat behind him.

D continues to tear up the local Hip Hop scene in 2009!

metric plugs in and out

If you have followed this blog long enough you know I'm a huge fan of Toronto's own Metric. The singer songwriter has released accoustic versions of songs from her Fantasies LP on an EP called Plug In, Plug Out. The EP will be available online at Amazon only in US, UK, France and Germany. After November 27th, the album will be available worldwide (excluding Canada due to lable blabbergabber) directly from her web site and on iTunes. If you want a full playlist and to check out some of the EP check it out here.

new cobra september 22...

I haven't posted a lot from these guys in a while. They've been in the studio making music. Now that they have new product coming out next month off of Urbnet Records, I'm sure I'll be posting more from OK Cobra. Today I found out that the duo have released their first single from their forthcoming album, Delirium Tremens. It's only available on the groups Myspace page so you'll to have to go here to check it out. The track is called I Quit (I Give Up). It's some good Cancon Hip Hop. Urbnet is releasing a bunch of good Hip Hop from local folk this year. We're in the works for a full album review. Stay tuned.

jackson music tributes...

I've been bombarded by different re-mixes, and tribute mixes and similar music hails to the late King of Pop in the past few days. Thought I would give a shout out to a couple of my favorites I've heard thus far..

Good friends of the blog, Circle Research were one of the first to put out something in memory to Michael. Check out the duo's special re-mix of Rock With You here

The legendary DJ Grouch made up a little Jackson tribute and you can download it here. The mix features a bunch of non-related Jackson tunes but tracks that basically convey how millions must feel right now.

Oh yeah. Just a reminder, that I posted my very own VMT yesterday and you can view it over here. I also posted a nice mixtape by the Press Play peeps. You can download their tribute here.

Furthermore, I'm sure all the local weeklies will be showcasing the works of the King this week and I'm sure we'll be able to download the tribute set at a later time. Watch out for some more tribute mixes coming in the next few weeks. Keep your ear out as we continue to remember Michael Joe Jackson.

humble and fred video of memories..

As a radio nerd, I always loved to see what was happening off air. Or what they jocks were doing while talking or announcing a track or stuff like that. This is the main reason why I was happy to see Mike Boon's Twitter's page today where he announced that he finally got his hands on the video of Humble and Fred's live Podcast from May 2nd. In case you haven't heard the podcast yet, then you'll be able to watch it. It's some funny stuff from two guys who should hook back up. Check out the video here.

humble and fred's 20th anniversary podcast of memories

A while back I teased at a Humble and Fred reunion. The duo got together earlier on this month to do their 20th Anniversary Podcast of Memories. After a couple of weeks of patiently waiting we're finally able to listen to the final product. You can check out the full show here and remember how great these two really were. Oh the great days of Toronto Radio. We miss you.
