rip robin gibb

Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees has died.

Gibb died after a long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery, according to a statement on his official website.

"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time," the statement said.

Robin and his brothers Barry and Maurice Gibb racked up dozens of hit songs in their five decade career. Robin Gibb, who had cancer, was 62.

The Bee Gees might be forever linked to the 1970s, the era of polyester outfits and blow-dried hair, thanks to the songs they wrote and performed for the movie Saturday Night Fever.

Disco, however, didn't make the Bee Gees. Their vocal harmonies and songwriting skills were hugely popular a decade earlier, like on their first U.S. release in 1967, New York Mining Disaster 1941.

rip adam yauch

I saw The Beastie Boys live in Michigan back in 1999 when I was attending broadcasting school. My friend had an extra ticket and she threw it my way. While Beastie Boys would've been epic enough, the card also had A Tribe Called Quest. We would later find out that it was The Tribe's last tour. Seeing two groups that inspired me in so many ways  rocking it, took my love for H.E.R to a whole different level.

Thank you for that memory, MCA. And all the other memories you were connected to. You were an inspiration to me and millions more.

Rest well.

whitney is gone.

Whitney is gone.

Rewind a week ago. I had just woke up and was only a few hours away from getting ready for the Superbowl. I spent the morning in the kitchen blasting some 80s favorites and doing the mandatory grabbing of the spoon and lip syncing in front of the mirror. Pure 80s styles. Then it hit me. Maybe I should do an all-80s retro mixtape. Educate the kids. I sat down in front of my computer and thought of the playlist. It hit me. I don't have Whitney Houston songs in my catalog. You can't do an 80s mixtape without a couple of Whitney joints. Me thinking of Houston lead me to wondering what the diva was up to.Did a quick search. TMZ posted a video of her at a couple of industry type parties. She looked good. Happy. The superstar she was. I read that she was in the works of doing a new movie where she'll be fronting the soundtrack. Good for her, I thought. The diva is back. I was happy that she was back on the right track. I was happy for her. My day went on. Ate chips. The Giants won. Didn't think of Whitney again.

Till last night.

The first thing I did when I heard the news was to get on Youtube and cued up I Wanna Dance with Somebody. Turned it from the Leaf game to CNN. The news had just broke. The coverage has started. Watching the breaking news while I Wanna Dance in the background. Standing in front of the television watching pictures roll while they were talking about how she was found at the Bev Hills Hilton, I started bumping my head back and forth. Feet moving. Knees getting loose. It wan't long until I was in full blown Whitney Houston  karaoke. I grabbed a nearby pen and started to belt out the lyrics to the vintage track.

For the rest of the night, I watched the CNN coverage. Houston friends, co-workers, weighing in on what a great talent the singer was. Showing some old clips of the diva singing. They spoke of The Bodyguard, the albums, and of course her run with Bobby. All the while, I had different Whitney songs humming in my head. Like a mental IPod on Shuffle. Tapping my feat on the couch. Smiling inside. Stories connected to the songs. Greatest Love of All was my Grade 6 graduation song. Remember rehearsing that song every single day for two weeks. Tired of the track by the end of the day, I would get picked up my parents. Get into the car and have the song playing. Again. On every station at least twice during the ride home. I knew that song inside and out. I dreamed that song in the spring of '89. To this day, when I think Whitney, I think of those days. And I'm sure many people who are over the age of 30 would have a similar memory.

I'm happy that I think of those days about Whitney. Her voice a work of art. Her charisma on stage. Her aura. This is how I will remember her. This is how I want to remember her. Block out the other stuff. She was already great before all that stuff. Her greatness overrules the other stuff. The other stuff that's not worth mentioning.

I'll continue to tap my feet to you Whitney and re-live the memories.

Damn. Whitney is gone.

positive energy to adele

News sources are saying that top talented English sonsgtress Adele needs throat surgery. She has cancelled all live dates. Sad story about a singer who is just now coming up and getting the recognition she deserves. It would be a great shame if she has to retire because of this. Hopefully Adele has a speedy recovery and is back warming our souls in no time.

Positive  energy to one of the best female entertainers of this time. Be Well.

Looks like the band is getting back together. After a weekend of running rumors, Stone Roses front man confirmed the Roses are reuniting and the official press conference will be held tomorrow. A friend of Ian Brown also said that he received a text from Brown saying We are going to rule the world again. It's happening. Looks like it's a Resurrection.

breakup bummer

It's been well documented on here how much I love REM's music over the years.In May I wrote about my reconnection with Automatic for the People and how the album mirrored my teenage years. When I learned today that the band will be breaking up, it felt like yet another chapter of my childhood is closing. For good? Who knows. Like a superhero dying or a TV show you grew up with ending, another piece of the good 'ol days has drifted away. Only to be thought of through pleasant memories and black and white images. The official press reads;

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.

Sad day in music. At least we'll always have the tapes.

addiction killed our songstress..

It's one of those days that make me sad. Sad for the millions of people who lost out on a tremendous talent gone too soon. Way before she was supposed to. Less than a decade after she graced us with her soulful voice and charismatic ways. Only releasing two studio albums, now we will never know what could've been.

Amy Winehouse joins the 27 Club. That VIP clique upstairs that quit too soon. That burnt out rather than fading away. I always think how good of a show that would be upstairs to have all those young rockers putting on a concert for their adoring fans. I always think. What if.

What if Amy said Yes to Rehab? The truth is, she had a disease.

Addiction.

Addiction is a disease that many overlook as a true killer but kills thousands every year.

Addiction is something that they have no power over anymore. It's a body and mind thing. They become so dependent on the substance of choice that they need it to survive. Like food. Or water.

Amy had her ups and downs. At the end, it's the disease that won. When artists look for inspiration they tend to look for the pain inside of them to create. Some artists can go into The Zone without any help from substances, but some can't. They need that extra boost to get them into That Place. That place where they feel. Where they can go in depth of what they experienced in their life and put it down on paper. It's because of these Zones some of the greatest songs were penned. Some of the best instrumentals were strummed. Sadly, Amy gave up her life for her art. The art that millions will continue to listen to and enjoy.

If you have never been there. If you haven't suffered from addiction, don't be too quick to place blame. It's a rough road and an extremely hard battle to win if you're not 100% willing to overcome it. Something that some still battle even though they've been cured for years. One setback could be death. Amy did her best. She lost the good fight.

Amy Winehouse was in our lives for such a short amount of time but made some of the best music from the past ten years. She sang from her soul and now the soul rests quietly.
